"If you've ever contemplated becoming a freelance editor, this book has all the info you'll need to get started.
The author has been a successful freelance writer and editor for many years, and has pretty much seen everything writing and book-related. He shares his experiences and tips in this book. I am a writer and have often wondered what editing for other writers would entail. I found this book to be a great behind-the-scenes peek into the life of an editor. He covers many things I hadn't even considered, such as how to deal with difficult clients and practicing good time management as your own boss.
I didn't think a nonfiction book about the how-tos of a job would be an emotional read, but I found myself feeling inspired while reading about the many pros of the career, such as time, creative, and scheduling freedom. Another thing I enjoyed was the easy-to-read, humorous tone of the book. Some of the cautionary tales of difficult clients and job experiences that led the author to the editing career path had me chuckling. Reading this book was like having a personal conversation with the author about his editing business. And the illustrations are fun, too.
Anybody who is interested in starting an editing business can benefit from the advice in this book. You'll be more prepared for what you will encounter in the business as well as have some strategies to avoid some of the potential pitfalls.
It was helpful to me, as a writer, to get inside an editor's head and see things from the other side of the publishing process. It has made me feel better prepared to work with editors in the future, knowing a bit more about the process (and even some pet peeves) of editors."

He has edited countless books and articles through his self-started business and has now published this book to springboard you into your own editing endeavors. At under 200 pages of text, it is a quick and easy road map that gives you some tricks of the trade for taking the plunge into self-employment. Amusing sketches by Kathy Kuczek dot the pages to give the book some character.
Tyler delves into the payment question (fees? method? contract?) that is likely to be one of the first hurdles a new editor might wrestle with, as well as the labyrinthine steps you must take to make your business "official". Marketing and networking are also discussed. Being self-employed can be a nerve-wracking and confusing situation for someone just starting out but this book lays out all of the considerations ahead of time so you don't have to be caught off-guard. Tyler's own experiences give the book some personality and he helpfully mentions some issues you may come across when taking on inexperienced clients. If there is one thing I took away, it's that there are very clearly a lot of people out there who need substantive help with their projects. Perhaps most important of all, he explains when and how to put your foot down and say "No" to a client or manuscript that is combative, offensive, or delinquent in some other way that makes the effort not worthwhile.
So if you have been pondering the challenge of being a self-employed editor - either full-time or even as a side gig - this is where you will want to look first. You don't have to start from scratch; use this book to get all your ducks in a row so you can hit the ground running if you do finally decide this is a passion that is worth the effort.
