Ebook War Dogs The True Story of How Three Stoners From Miami Beach Became the Most Unlikely Gunrunners in History Guy Lawson Books

Soon to be a major motion picture from the director of The Hangover starring Jonah Hill, the page-turning, behind-closed-doors account of how three kids from Florida became big-time weapons traders for the government and how the Pentagon later turned on them.
In January of 2007, three young stoners from Miami Beach were put in charge of a $300 million Department of Defense contract to supply ammunition to the Afghanistan military. Instead of fulfilling the order with high-quality arms, Efraim Diveroli, David Packouz, and Alex Podrizki (the dudes) bought cheap Communist-style surplus ammunition from Balkan gunrunners. The trio then secretly repackaged millions of rounds of shoddy Chinese ammunition and shipped it to Kabul—until they were caught by Pentagon investigators and the scandal turned up on the front page of The New York Times.
That’s the “official” story. The truth is far more explosive. For the first time, journalist Guy Lawson tells the thrilling true tale. It’s a trip that goes from a dive apartment in Miami Beach to mountain caves in Albania, the corridors of power in Washington, and the frontlines of Iraq and Afghanistan. Lawson’s account includes a shady Swiss gunrunner, Russian arms dealers, Albanian thugs, and a Pentagon investigation that caused ammunition shortages for the Afghanistan military. Lawson exposes the mysterious and murky world of global arms dealing, showing how the American military came to use private contractors like Diveroli, Packouz, and Podrizki as middlemen to secure weapons from illegal arms dealers—the same men who sell guns to dictators, warlords, and drug traffickers.
This is a story you were never meant to read.

"Good read, different then movie. It is interesting how the movie can largely twist the facts. Many differences from movie, and hard to tell at times which is the right story. A very detailed and thoughtful book."

War Dogs The True Story of How Three Stoners From Miami Beach Became the Most Unlikely Gunrunners in History Guy Lawson Books Reviews
- While I would rate four or four and a half stars usually people won't even consider a book unless its five stars so I give five.
I am a huge fan of history as told through the eyes of participants, the Travels of Marco Polo are my favorite collections of historical writings of all time, however just as Marco Polo is historically dubious so too is the story of Diveroli and Packouz as they themselves told it. Efraim Diveroli released a book that although I didn't read it was panned for the ego that was inserted into it. To get an impartial while sympathetic view of two 20 year old gun-runners who may have been a shaping force in the Afghan War as we know it, as well as learn about how Bush Administration handled the war effort, and the politics and intrigue that surrounded them read this book by journalist Guy Lawson, who also wrote Octopus a book about wall Street and The Brotherhood a story about cops that worked for the Mafia. This book is a fascinating look at modern history.
Also for those who want to retain the information they read and believe in the "testing effect" check out the War Dogs study guide

It is an incredibly well researched piece of journalism, but it reads like page-turning fiction - except this story is way too crazy to have been made up. Guy Lawson is at the top of his game here, letting us in on how two stoner teenagers (working at a kitchen table with two cellphones) were awarded millions of dollars of US government military contracts and how they deal with everyone from sleazy but world renowned international arms dealers to average Joe's taking advantage of the loosely regulated world of internet gun trade. I will never again be able to hear about troops being deployed anywhere for any reason without wondering where their weapons came from, and who procured them.
- I read Efraim Diveroli's first hand account of this bizarre tale prior to reading Guy Lawson's version. After reading Diveroli's egocentric and headstrong perspective, Lawson's balanced and deliberate approach feels watered down and bland at times. Nonetheless, it's Lawson's version that most deserves to be read. Lawson does a good job of being fair in his treatment of the two embittered one-time partners, where Diveroli used nearly every mention of Packouz to disavow any shred of competency Packouz may have shown during their partnership. Lawson's journalistic approach lacks the brash page-turning heat of Diveroli's storytelling, but it shines with the closest semblance of truth most of us are ever likely to know about this incredible, nearly unbelievable, business adventure. Both books are well worth reading, but if you can only choose one, choose Lawson's.
- Good read, different then movie. It is interesting how the movie can largely twist the facts. Many differences from movie, and hard to tell at times which is the right story. A very detailed and thoughtful book.
- Starts with a bang but so hard to finish reading. Bogged down in tedious details and the story never deviates. Just more of the same page after page. I never skim through pages and skip to the end of books but I'm mighty tempted here.
- A fascinating movie with an intriguing and hard to believe story line that's actually a true story.
Thought the film was terrific so I bought the book.
Sometimes the book and the film are vastly different. - It reads like a long article but gives very interesting insight into the politics and corruption behind the business of war. It's all seen through the eyes of a couple of amateur kids so it makes for a pretty good story. The movie was entertaining but definitely puts many changes on the real story from the book. If you liked the movie but want to know more and the true story, then it is a must read.
- I really enjoyed this book, finding it both a wildly entertaining story and a story from which I learned a lot about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Lawson provides a fascinating look into the shady world of arms dealing, and the bizarre, almost farcical, nature of military bureaucracy. In doing so he exposes many of the absurdities of war and foreign policy - such as how the US govt. ban on Chinese armaments caused millions of AK-47 rounds manufactured by the Chinese decades ago to sit, unused in US military warehouses while the Afghan National Army faced such a severe ammunition shortage that Afghan soldiers were quite literally faced with fighting the Taliban without any bullets to fire back.
