• You really have to read Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's book "Cross Creek" to fully understand why she was sued for "Invasion of Privacy" by her former friend Zelma Cason, who thought her character was depicted as a hussy in the book. This book contains a lot of the transcripts from the testimonies of local witnesses, some of which are quite amusing. Not an exciting read, but full of the interesting local color of rural Florida in the early 1930s.

• I concur with the reviewer who recommends you read Marjorie Rawlings's "Cross Creek" first. Many years ago I wrote a brief article, published in an obscure newsletter, about the lawsuit that resulted, filed by someone who didn't like how Rawlings profiled her. I mentioned a female lawyer (one of Florida's first) who had been involved in the case, and who was a relative of a friend. When this book came out my friend sent it to me. I was enchanted. Professor Acton tells the story with a lawyer's precision but a writer's heart. And if you like her book, you can ice the cake with Gordon Bigelow's compilation of Rawlings's letters, a few of which comment on the trial. Marjorie Rawlings was a complex character, far more than just the author of "The Yearling."
• This book describes the trial in early Florida that set the precedent for our Privacy rights. Recommend this highly for any Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings fans.
