She begged God to rescue her. He said, “Go.” So she headed out into the blizzard. In a car that wasn’t exactly hers, with a dog who wasn’t exactly a rat terrier, she drove. Until she ran out of gas in the small Maine town of Mattawooptock. Mattawoopwhat? What on earth is God thinking? But it is there, in a weird little bathroom in a weird little church in a weird little town that Maggie Hansen finds herself. And as God would have it, she finds a lot more than that.

"Maggie drives away from a bad relationship and is led to a homeless shelter in Maine where she begins a process of self-discovery that kept me interested until the last page.

I liked Maggie and all the other characters that I got to know in this story. I laughed out loud at times but there were also very serious moments as I was led to think about homelessness and the menu different reasons why people might be in that situation.

The romance in the story was very sweet but I also liked that this story was not 'just a romance.'

I definitely plan to read more books written by Robin Merrill.

  • If you're looking for a well-written, amusing, touching, and believable story with quirky characters, you've come to the right place! The Christian theme is strong but not overpowering. Shelter is a fast-moving story which was great because I didn't want to put it down once I started it. The author did a marvelous job creating characters I cared about. I felt like I knew them from page one. I love her easy flow and somewhat sarcastic humor, too. This is the first book I've read by Robin Merrill but it surely won't be the last.
  • Nice story. I only gave it a three because it could have had a little more depth to it. But don't let this rating stop you from reading this!
  • A great story. The characters are believable; I'm not familiar with Maine, but it's snowing when the principal character goes there, which seems reasonable. It's also a good clean Christian book, and easily worth five stars. David Carlyle, "Billy Thomas."
  • Wow what a great book! I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but this is a different sort of Christian romance. The blurb doesn't let you know that it's a romance, but it is. The romance part is almost equal to the other aspects of the story. I fell in love with Galen myself, lol. The other characters at the shelter were so varied and eclectic, and downright funny! I always love stories that show the characters praying, and really getting answers to their prayers, and this story didn't disappoint in that aspect. Loved the dog, and I sure admired Maggie for her patience with all of the grouchy people, lol. I loved the ending, and although it didn't have any big mystery elements that some people might want, it was totally enjoyable and a great read. I loved that it realistically portrayed a fairly new Christian learning to navigate God's leadings and finding out His purpose for her life. Going now to check out Ms. Merrill's other books. )
  • What a wonderful story full of God, and how he works in our everyday lives.
I am so happy I took a chance on this book, as I will be looking into reading more books by Robin Merrill.

Maggie, heard God tell her to leave her relationship and home and GO. She obeyed, and was led to a homeless shelter
in a church, where she meets people from all walks of life, with different stories, and even meets a man, Galen. Will she be
able to let go of her fears and trust in God and her heart? Without a penny to her name, and no job, what will she do? How will
she overcome her situation? When the church catches fire what will happen?

I enjoyed this book a lot, and I encourage you to take a chance and read this one. It's full of hope, and love, and compassion, and realistic views, and a few twists along the way.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It's a relevant story of homelessness, God, and finding love where you least expect it. The heroine has never been homeless, but finds herself fitting in, and then moving into more of a leadership role. She uses the talent God gave her to help others in her same situation, but also to help some people in the community in general. She has a Christian attitude toward all, a forgiving attitude. She finds love where she least expected to, and helps those around her, homeless or not, to feel better about themselves and their journey to/with God. I look forward to reading more books by this author. It left me feeling really good.
  • Maggie Hansen runs away from the boyfriend she’d lived with in Massachusetts, and ended up at a homeless shelter/church in Maine. She manages to make a home for herself there, begins cutting and fixing hair, and even finds another boyfriend - a much nicer one. However, making her way in the new surroundings isn't always easy.

The book was unusual enough to be a good change of pace, but it fell short of what it could have been. The writing seemed a bit juvenile, and there were too many extraneous things happening that had no purpose in the story. At first, Maggie’s relationship with Galen was interesting, but it became ho-hum toward the end. Some things made no sense to me, and others were so repetitive they became irritating, like Maggie kissing her dog over and over again. The dog’s name was “Eddie” part of the time but sometimes “Eddy.” And, there were several grammatical mistakes, like “quick” for “quickly.” I also questioned some of its values, like the way Maggie living with her first boyfriend was acceptable and the fact that the church tried to deceive and be dishonest with the code inspector. It was an okay read, but I was glad when it finally ended.
