Early Korea is dedicated to developing the fields of early Korean history and archaeology in the English language. The present volume consists of six scholarly works by specialists active in these fields. Three studies focus on the topic of recent advances in historical archaeology on the Korean peninsula and adjacent regions and how this is changing the ways historians understand the history of the earliest states on the peninsula. Another study surveys the origins and development of ceramic traditions in Korea based on recently recovered archaeological data. Finally, two studies discuss the practice of heritage management in Korea, focusing on rescue archaeology and heritage protection.

  • I would have whole heartedly gave this product 5 stars if it wasn't for the lack of info involving the early days of the Silla Kingdom that lead to their expansions in the region. They did a great job discussing the issues with both Korean and Chinese archeology today, going over Koguryo settlements sites in Northern Korea, Paekche city locations in South Korea, and the relationship between the Kaya Confederation and Japan during the pre-Three Kingdoms Period, prior to the Silla expansions. They also did a good job discussing the modern political environment and why there has been issues in preserving sites throughout South Korea.

This is a great book and certainly does a great job giving you an overview of that the information shows. But I would have liked to have seen more info on the early day developments of Silla.
  • I have been waiting a while for an English book on early Korean history to come out for a while. I have several other books written in English on Korean archaeology and early history(by Sarah M. Nelson and Gina Barnes) and this one is just as good, if not better due to the print quality of the book. I ordered a soft cover and the quality was great with color pages throughout and pictures (something the other books lack). Also, many words and phrases also had the "hanja" or Chinese characters and sometimes the hangul spelling for the readers' reference, which is not always available in English print books on Korean history. The bibliography is also very key with the names of the books in either hanja or hangul...again, very useful! The book offers many perspectives on recent studies in Korean archaeology and breaks it down by the early kingdoms Koguryo, Paekche, Silla, and Kaya. I think overall, the layout, print quality, color pics and diagrams, and use of Chinese and Korean characters for some technical words was great! This book is labeled with a "1", so, I'm hoping they come out with the remainder of the series soon! Worth the money, definitely.
  • This is a collection of papers from various experts on the major groups in pre-Koreyo history. As can be expected, some of the sections are more engaging than others, but all were well presented. Occasionally terms are dropped without much explanation for readers who are not well versed in the era, but not to a frustrating extent, and not to the point where someone new to the subject feels lost.

On a superficial side note, the quality of the printing and paper is a work of beauty in it's own right, which makes the words "display book" come to mind.
