THE STUNNING CONCLUSION TO THE SWORD CHRONICLES TRILOGY!

"Epic fantasy meets superheroes, with lots of action and great characters. The Sword Chronicles is dark yet hopeful, and very entertaining. Collings is a great storyteller."    - Larry Correia, New York Times bestselling author of Monster Hunter International and Son of the Black Sword

***
Her friends are gone. Ansborn is dying. And there is only one place Sword can go to the Gods.

Planning to destroy those responsible for the deaths of her friends and the destruction of Ansborn, Sword will descend into a world unlike any she has ever known. Aided by the two most dangerous enemies she has ever faced, she will climb below the clouds that have hidden Ansborn from the world for a thousand years. And she will kill anyone and anything she finds.

But Sword does not know the truth that Ansborn is a construct of a great nation that passed away a thousand years before she was born. That the world she knew is a vast experiment; a second chance for a lost race.

Sword is about to face the greatest enemy she has yet encountered. An enemy that has lived for countless generations. An enemy that has destroyed all who dared challenge it. An enemy that Sword must defeat; for she is the last hope of Ansborn, and of every living person.

She is Sword, and only she . . . can save the world.

The Sword Chronicles Child of Ash eBook Michaelbrent Collings Reviews

  • Michaelbrent Collings does it again. In this final chapter and third book of The Sword Chronicles, it is up to Sword to save the world. Her friends are gone, her world is dying and she is alone, traversing into unknown territory to fight an unknown enemy and to try to salvage what is left on Ansborn.

I love Sword. She is the embodiment of honor doing what needs to be done, for the right reasons, regardless of cost. Her bravery and strength is shines through in her character and Michaelbrent is the consummate master at character development. That is the beauty of his writing. I usually stick to one genre Horror. MCB made me love science fiction, fantasy, and young author work.

As a writer and a reader, character is the glue that holds a story together, and a reader to the story. Yes, you need plot, themes, an arc, a path, a journey; however, without strong characters you can feel empathy for, a book is just words thrown together to create a little time killing break from life.

With Collings, you are in the story. You live the life through the character and you feel their emotions. That is the mark of a professional author.
  • As the final book in the 'Sword Chronicles' series, 'Child of Ash' pretty much delivers the goods. As you might imagine given the overall tone of the series, specially 'Child of Sorrows' things look pretty grim for our heroes.

I enjoyed the book, and really the only minor complaint I have is with the ending...but that is a matter of personal taste, really. It lines up with everyone in-universe and more or less works.

All told, I can recommend this book, as well as the rest of the series.
  • This was a perfect ending to a spectacular trilogy! Child of Ash was a dark, thrilling fantasy novel. It was my favorite book out of the three. The entire series was one surprise after another. This book was no exception. I recommend The Sword Chronicles Trilogy to all who love action and adventure!
  • I really enjoyed this series. I was not expecting it to end the way it did, but it was very satisfying.
  • In a world balanced on mountain peaks, where going below the clouds mean death, plague and war have devastated the people. The Guardians no longer protect, and Sword has lost her friends, her family, her love and is focussed solely on revenge…

Then chapter one really begins, and hell breaks loose across all of Ansborn, in the lives of characters introduced in the earlier books, and new – just in time to rip your heart out through the pages, as all are tested, grieving, fighting and seeking answers.

I can’t think of a trilogy that has ended as strongly as The Sword Chronicles has with Child of Ash. Character arcs, plot threads and world building not only continue, but the repercussions are intensified. Lives are lost, backstories revealed, and answers finally given that leave the reader breathless – if not swearing – at the reveals, the devastations, the losses and understanding amid the ashes. And there are so many ashes.

Ashes, yes, and plentiful – as well as incredible beauty. Collings has crafted a tale (a series) of astounding depth, deceptively cloaked in action, adventure, rebellion and connection. It can be read superficially, and your pulse will race along with the characters, chasing answers and a flashing sign around corners, castles and corridors. A deeper read considers philosophy, humanity, faith, environment, and relationships from innate to meta levels. Suspense is built, released, torqued incredibly tighter – then we’re left hanging, for a chapter or two to catch up with another character’s dilemma, and promptly be impaled on their experiences. Also, intertextuality is something I’ve come to both anticipate and enjoy in Collings’ works, and Child of Ash does not disappoint.

Child of Ash doesn’t disappoint at all. If anything, and requiring a microscope to measure, it only disappoints in that I wish there were another Sword Chronicles immediately available, or even hinted at. This is consummate storytelling, and an outstanding finale to a brilliant, original series.

    Recommended to
Those who like huge adventure, new worlds, and plot twists you don’t see coming
Those who like huge adventure, new worlds, and a completed series before starting
Anyone looking for a kick-arse, complicated heroine and cohort of unintentional consequences

    Not recommended for
Anyone with a heart condition that reacts badly to suspense/tension building
Those who like damsels being rescued by males
Any who often wonder if they have the plague/flu/contractable diseases/superpowers/potential to single-handedly save the world/humanity
  • Well, I'd never have guessed any of the surprises that awaited in the final book of the Sword Chronicles trilogy. Some were sad, others, kind of sad, and the rest? A myriad of emotions. I had come to love each character with each new book, and this book, however, exemplified why I loved Marionette from day one. There are elements to this book that keep you wanting more, and the author knows exactly how to keep teasing you with breadcrumbs leading you deeper.

This was a story that I very much enjoyed losing myself within and not wanting to leave. It's a story of humanity at its very worst and its very best, that struggle to survive and overcome the dark that prevails.

The only thing I'm disappointed in is that the story has reached its conclusion, though the conclusion itself was well done and I am pleased.

This is a trilogy that will stay in my library permanently.
  • The perfect finish to the trilogy!

It was wonderful, and perfectly wrapped up. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book! There were so many characters I cared so much about (Scieran, Inmil, and Maci are my favorites, the relationships between the three of them felt so real) and I could hardly wait to see how/if everyone survived. The huge twist at the end of book two was so surprising, I knew this book would be a roller coaster and it absolutely delivered.
  • The final book does a great job tying up loose ends and bringing things to their climatic conclusion. There were sections that were confusing, but everything gets explained in the end. There were more losses (a few I was NOT prepared for!). And of course, MB added in twists and turns to keep you guessing. All in all, I really enjoyed the whole series. I do, however, wish there was more. I want to see how Sword deals with the new world.
