Summary, Analysis Review of Dan Ariely's Payoff by Instaread

Preview
Payoff by Dan Ariely is a companion to the author’s well-known TED talks, which focus on research that illuminates the role of reward and effort in motivation. Ariely examined his own motivations for helping a woman whose teenaged boys were badly burned, a medical trauma he experienced himself when he was approximately the boys’ age. He realized that he helped the woman because of the meaning behind his actions.

Human motivation is influenced by numerous factors including the use of meaning to counteract the feeling of helplessness. Motivation is eliminated when people realize that their work has no meaning. This is a common scenario in corporations where the explanation of the meaning behind certain projects is viewed as a waste of time rather than as an investment in motivation. When work has meaning, people are productive, and they are especially productive when they are doing something they enjoy…

"I really enjoyed this summary. I majored in business, and a lot of focus was on leadership. Some of it was so vague and general and just didn't have much effect on my education. But I wish this book was incorporated into my education. It is so basic and easy to understand and just makes so much sense. It's one of those books (well, the summary is anyways) where you read it and instantly think "duh, why didn't I think of that".

One thing I must point out is that the summary seems to use the terms manager and leader interchangeably. But they really aren't synonyms. I won't take the time to cite exact definitions, but generally managers are viewed as people who manage human resources. People who use their human assets to achieve quantitate goals. Leaders are people who build relationships with their peers, encourage them to do their best work, help them seek intrinsically valuable work, and achieve more qualitative goals.

This summary explains how to be that kind of leader. All of the key points emphasize the importance of treating employees like humans with feelings and desires. It talks about creating work for people that they are motivated to do, not by money, but by feelings of importance worth. People want to know that their work matters. That their efforts made a difference. They want to be recognized for their efforts and seen as someone who makes a difference. Even when the difference is small. They want their lives and work to matter.

I really enjoyed this summary, and I would definitely add this title to my to-read list if I was in any position of leadership whether it be in work, parenthood, church, volunteer work, etc. It can apply to any area of leadership.

I received a complimentary copy of this Instaread summary in exchange for my honest opinion."
