Matt has spent his whole life wishing he could be a girl. As a high school student in suburban Georgia during the Nineties, he is able to take his first steps towards figuring out who he really is when he starts at a new school and meets Michelle. With his new friend by his side, Matt begins exploring local gay bars and discovering more about his own transgender feelings. Life gets even more confusing when he moves to New York and falls for Erin, a struggling artist and lesbian. Matt must decide if an ordinary life as a normal guy could work, or if his whole life has been leading toward transition. American Transgirl is a funny, heartfelt story that explores the confusion, dysphoria, longing, and curiosity felt by transgender people as they struggle to figure out who they are, where they fit in the world, and who will accept them as they are. Transition is, ultimately, only one part of a larger life filled with the search for acceptance, fulfillment, love, and a place to call home. Author Faith DaBrooke is a transgender woman whose podcast, The Gender Rebels, is heard by thousands each week.

American Transgirl Faith DaBrooke Books Reviews
- Pardon the "mere" 4 stars. I loved this book and wouldn't change a thing. I'm just not that into absolutes, so I refrain from 5 (or zero) star reviews.
DaBrooke is a wonderful story teller, and the people and places come alive through her prose. I identified with parts of her tale (most of the inner dialog and emotional elements resonated) and was captivated by the bits that were foreign and exotic to me. NYC in the early 2000s really came alive for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's very down to earth, slice of life. If your idea of a good time is crawling into a good story and experiencing the world through the eyes and soul of a sympathetic protagonist, I think you'll find this book just what you're looking for. If you're looking for bodice rippers or action/adventure, there's plenty of both elsewhere on .
Personally, this story was everything I hoped it would be. Thanks, Faith DaBrooke for putting this tale and these memorable people out into the -verse. - This is just a wonderful story of love and personal growth, set in the context of gender transition. The interesting thing about the gender shift is that it occurred so naturally, almost without real planning. The author also demonstrates a unique way of capturing the essence of those about whom she writes and her dialogue is screenplay worthy. This work also happens to provide a nostalgic look at New York City, my old home, accurately capturing what it’s like to live there. There are some typos, which can be expected in a self published book, but they are easily overlooked because this is such a good, sweet story. I highly recommend this fine memoir.
- Like the story line and the character development. Y
Obviously write what you know best about was indicative of the author's New York City environment and people that live there along with her understanding of gender change and real life struggles, inhibitions and fear of the " what if". Sweet read. - I like the author, but this story was full of typos and misspellings. I'm not a professional editor, but I would have loved to have been given an opportunity to "clean" these kinds of things up.
- This is a great book. That's the easiest way to put it. The protagonist was immensely likeable, and for me, she was also immensely relatable, while the supporting cast helped flesh out the central themes of the book without feeling forced in any way. The story itself was fun to read, with plenty of humour and heart to really help you root for everyone. Some characters who were pretty important didn't get a conclusion, which is kind of disappointing, and there were some editing errors that could probably be fixed, but all in all, it's great. I thoroughly loved reading this.
- This was a joy to read. It's nice to see a book about a transgender person that's written by someone who has experienced all of these things. It was sweet and heartfelt, but also heartbreaking at parts. She does an amazing joy of showing you the real life struggles people with gender dysphoria are going through every day. Whether you're trans, cis, or something in between; whether you know a trans person, or just want to know more about them, I could not recommend this book more.
- I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The characters were engaging and the story was well written. I am already reading Faith DaBrooke's other novel on the strength of this one.
- i did enjoy it, but the happy ending, and no major conflicts made it a little on the light side.
