A intimate portrait of the Mexican composer AgustÃn Lara, who was often referred to as a poet, and who became a legend in his own time in Mexico, and throughout the world.
Ebook Mi novia la tristeza/ My Girlfriend The Sadness Spanish Edition Guadalupe Loaeza Pavel Granados 9789707774223 Books
"Two thick volumes, Mi novia la tristeza and Canciones de Agustin Lara, clearly represent years of painstaking research and a labor of
love for a great composer in danger of being forgotten. The
biography does not pretend to be scholarly and therefore does not contain any footnotes. But the title is unfortunate, because only hardcore aficionados remember that Lara wrote a song by that title. It also includes dialogs which may or may not have taken place, and dialogs attributed to the wrong person. For example, the words attributed by Loaeza to a female admirer of Silverio Perez were actually said by the young man who helped Pedro Vargas and Silverio
Perez with their luggage at the San Juan, Puerto Rico airport. When the young man noticed the sharp contrast between the tenor (dark and
chubby) and the bullfighter (pale and slim), he said to Silverio:
"Oye, tu no eles el tolmento de las mujeles. Tu eles la muelte pelsonificada."
In the bibliography, Loaeza omits several important items, such as Ramon Garmabella's book, and Lara's autobiographical article in the Jan 15, 1968 issue of Life en Espanol. Among the many tributes to Lara, the author could have mentioned or illustrated the postage stamps in his honor issued by Mexico (in 1971 and 1995) and by El Salvador in 2005.
Canciones is basically a chronological catalog of most of Lara's songs (alas, lyrics only!!) and some but not all of the artists who recorded them. The greatest disappointments: no musical scores, and no alphabetical index to the titles of the songs. Why not throw in the musical scores of at least 30 of Lara's greatest hits, and perhaps 15 or 20 of his lesser known songs? And how can one locate the lyrics of say, Mia nomas, unless one happens to know that it was composed in 1936? The Canciones does include an alphabetical list of most of the artists who recorded Lara's songs, but omits some important names such as Aida Cuevas, Vicente Fernandez, and Isaac Salinas.
While it is extremely difficult to choose Lara's best songs, my
own personal choices for the top 20 are, in alphabetical order: Aquel
amor, Arrancame la vida, Azul, Cada noche un amor, La clave azul,
Enamorada, Escarcha, Espanolerias, Granada, Janitzio, Madrid, Maria
Bonita, Marimba, Mia nomas, Noche de ronda, Novillero, Rival, Se me
hizo facil, Silverio, and Solamente una vez. Among his lesser known
pieces, the delightful mazurka "Los cuatro gatos" deserves to be
resurrected.
Both volumes contain numerous photos of Lara's lovers, friends,
performers, etc., which are an added treasure. All in all, two large
volumes of permanent value and now available at reasonable prices."
